Thanks for the interesting prompt. I’ve always assumed (if I assumed anything in this regard) that honcho has its origins in Spanish, with a possible Mexican connection. It’s always nice to learn something new.

I did, too, when I first heard it. Definitely sounds Spanish. I think tossing in a few RDP words of foreign origin can add a bit of pizzazz — Fandango’s FOWC word for today. 😉
