I did “Cat” and then “Dog” and I was really tempted to do “Bird” but came across a brilliant word this week so got distracted. Since I do haiku and senryu most of the time, short words are a treasure especially when you discover a new one.
vigor or vivacity of style or performance. “she told her story with some brio” (dictionary.com)
enthusiastic vigor : vivacity, verve. “sings with brio” (merriam-webster)
synonyms: vigor, vivacity, gusto, verve, zest, enthusiasm, vitality, dynamism, animation, spirit, energy;
Merriam-Webster also gives snippets of recent usage:
- Ironically, the film is conspicuous not for its brio but its blandness.
— michael o’sullivan, kansascity, “Paul Rudd’s ‘The Catcher Was a Spy’ bobbles a fascinating real-life story,” 28 June 2018
- But shocks of acid color hint at the couple’s unmistakably modern Southern California brio.
— nancy hass, ELLE Decor, “Inside an Upper East Side Home that Trades Stuffiness for Neon-Hued Glamour,” 21 May 2018
- As portrayed with loose-limbed brio by recent Salem State University graduate Chris Kandra (a find), Gerry is one of those rogues who seems to believe his own blarney.
— don aucoin, BostonGlobe.com, “A dance of regret in Gloucester Stage’s ‘Lughnasa’,” 20 June 2018
I hope that gives you some ideas on how to use “brio” in a sentence. For photograph or art ideas, you might keep this in mind : “vivacity of style”, “vigorous performance” for photographs and art that has brio. Imagine an abstract with powerful splashes of paint or a singer belting out a tune. Hope you have fun with it.
Okay, for those who like to rhyme, think of words that end with eeeooo sound like studio, bio, Oreo, Rio or go with just the eneding “ooo” sound like Ciao, Fido. (oh geez, now I’m thinking of oreo cookies) You might have to use your imagination but it can be done. Don’t forget you can use frequently shortened words like bio or cardio and even names like Fabio — remember him of the romance cover fame? Common foreign words too like “Ciao” or “Lothario” can be used.
